Hamlet Analysis
1. Hamlet waits so long to kill Claudius for a few reasons. He does not find out that Claudius killed his father until the third act. He had to make sure that Claudius was guilty and he did this by creating a play reinacting the murder of his father. He wants the murder of the king to be perfect; the subjects must know of the death. He spends more time planning then actually committing the murder. So when finally it is almost too late he realizes that he has waited too long and finally kills Claudius. Sure he has many opportunities to kill Claudius but he wants to do it perfectly, and it is that reason that it takes him so long to finally do it.
2. His madness has a method; which is used to deceive his opponents. By pretending to be mad, he makes Polonius, the king’s spy to believe that Hamlet is no longer a threat to the king. However, Ophelia’s madness is very real, and as a result she suicides. I believe that at one point, when Hamlet was contemplating the death of Yorick that he truley crosses the line of madness. But very quickly, he becomes sober when he sees that Ophelia has killed herself. His indecisiveness is often falsely interpreted as being madness, he changes his mind so often that it is easy to think that he is mad.
3. The Oedipal attraction is definitely present in Hamlet. Laertes talks to his sister Ophelia in sexually suggestive terms. Also, when Ophelia’s funeral procession takes place, Laertes jumps into Ophelia’s grave to hold her. Hamlet is also obsessed with his mother’s sexuality and always is concerned about what she is doing. I believe that it wasn’t her fault for Hamlet Sr’s death but she is interacting with the enemy by being involved with Claudius. By joining him in bed she is guilty. The age difference is not much between Hamlet in Gertrude, probably 20 years at the most. Although people could interpret some sexual themes between Hamlet and his mother, I think it’s because his father just died.Hamlet is mad at ophelia because he needs to take his anger out on someone.
4. Suicide and death becomes a huge part of the play once Hamlet dies. Death is a really taboo topic and is very mysterious. To be or not to be really means… to live or suicide that is the question. He comes to the conclusion that people are afraid of death and for that reason, they will not commit suicide even though life is cruel. Morally, suicide is bad, but if it is for a reason that is just, then it is ok. But mortality is questioned often, and he concludes that suicide is wrong.
5. ”Tis now the very witching time of night”… Hamlet tries to catch Claudius to be guilty for killing his father by using the play. Since the play worked, and he now knows that Claudius is guilty he becomes confident and says this sililoquy. He is now sure that he will avenge his father’s death. Yet, he still is indecisive, and only when he is near death, does he kill Claudius.
6. I believe that Hamlet is one of the best plays ever written because it has so many underlying themes, motifs and drama. Misogyny, contemplating death, indecisiveness, hearing and incest. Very dramatic language is used, every word seems to have a purpose yet it is hard to understand what some of the characters see. Which makes people have to watch/read this play many times to fully understand it, which truly makes it great.
